    Hello class,

My name is Lawrence Jatker and I am a Muslim of Circassian (Caucasian) ancestry who was born and raised here in New Jersey. My current major here at BCCC is political science and I plan to establish a career in international relations, perhaps in diplomatic work with the U.S. State Department or in the field of intelligence. I have returned to finish my studies after several years of “hiatus” including extensive traveling and service in the U.S. Army. My passions include music, history, politics, theology, linguistics, anthropology, metaphysics, and the occult. Having done quite a bit of freelance research to satisfy my own curiosities on various aspects of Islam and of other faiths and philosophies, I’ve enrolled in this class with hopes to further my knowledge of Islam and gain more insight from both my instructor and the views of my fellow classmates. I wish everyone a pleasant semester.

      Hi everyone ! šŸ™‚

My name is Beata Szastaj and I am from Poland. I am catholic married to a Turkish muslim. Islam is pretty familiar to me not only because of my husband but i also work in Turkish restaurant where most of the costumers are muslim. I am taking this class because i would like to learn more about Islam, also i was always interested in Islam and read a lot about it on my own, believe it or not i even read the whole Al Quran to understand the way muslim live, behave and what “rules” they fallow. It is still not enough of knowledge so i am in this class to expand the knowledge…
My hobbies are playing piano and drawing, and lately learning Turkish. I am majoring in Criminal Justice and planning to go further with my studies to become a lawyer. I hope to learn some new things about Islam from you guys, have a wonderful evening and enjoy the class !

What is up people, Iā€™m Jose Nazario, and Iā€™m 22 years old also I was born and raised in Newark. I have a very urban type of personality but I would prefer to live in a rural area where it is quiet. I am majoring in Political Science and am working to be a corporate lawyer someday. I love sports and witnessing the human body in conjunction with the human mind flex, endure, and work to peak of itā€™sā€™ capabilities. I hope to one day retire as a judge or politician and move to a modest farm in a tropical climate. My inspiration comes from god and his wondrous works seen all around universe. However, most of my motivation comes from his most marvelous creation, the Bible. The Bible is one truly perfect living thing on this earth. When I say that people always tell me, ā€œthe Bible isnā€™t alive,ā€ and I always recite the same thing: Hebrews 4:12 ā€œthe word of God is alive and exerts power.ā€
My understanding of Islam is that it officially came into existence after Muhammad the Prophet began to write the Quran and spread itsā€™ message to others. It is to my understanding that Islamic believers do not consider Jesus as the son of God but rather as another messenger of God. I also am aware that Islam accepts and believes the messages sent forth by God to the prophets found in the Torah as well as the Bible. I also know that Islam requires you to fast during the month of Ramadan just as Jesus did after he gave his Sermon on the Mount of Olives. Finally, I recognize in Islam that prayer is extremely important, so much so that, those in the Islamic faith pray a minimum of 5 times a day.
My expectations of the course are to be able to understand Islam more thoroughly and continue to find more common principles and views that both Jews and Christians share. I also expect the class to clear up any misimpressions or misinterpretations of Islam that has been instilled in me by the media and other people in general. I anticipate that the class will me find answers or find compromise in the disagreements between Christianity and Islam. Finally, I general want to be more acquainted and familiar with the Islamic faith, especially since it is the fastest growing religion in the world today. People generally tend to hate or fear something their unfamiliar with of cannot understand, I do not want to feel neither one of those emotions towards the Islamic faith or itsā€™ believers, that is basically why I am taking this course.

    Hello classmates,
This is Ammarah Asghar and I am 20 years old. I am from Pakistan but was raised here most of my life. Since I was little, I am a practicing Muslim, mostly due to my parents because they are pretty religious. On the side I like to read books (no Iā€™m not a nerd), cook and hang out with friends and family. This is my last semester at BCC and I plan to transfer out to Rutgers, Newark. I took this class because I want to learn different point of views of Islam, whether from the professor or the classmates with different faiths. I am looking forward to an interesting semester, good luck to everyone. šŸ™‚

    Hello Fellow

My name is Mansouria Zaidi, I was born Muslim, but I need to learn more about Islam because it is always good to acquire knowledge.
I am originally from Algeria where I grew up and studied. As soon as I graduated, I started teaching Topography. It has given me an incomparable experience because I transmitted some knowledge to my students, and I do not deny that I have acquired some as well. Then I worked for an engineering firm in New Jersey as a civil designer where I enjoyed the atmosphere and improved my civil, architectural, and environmental skills. Unfortunately I lost my job; I knew for sure that I was not the only one in the country hit by the economic situation. So I tried first to find my balance, gathered my strength, and decided to come back to college to continue my studies and take the train that carries the learning and the knowledge to go further (Mathematics teacher or translator, I love both).
I strongly believe that one of the goals of education should be to develop a love to learn, and also not be limited to the adolescent years. And for this reason, I was not discouraged when I lost my job. Even though I am a mother, and have different responsibilities and tasks, I came back to school with the intention and profound faith (in ALLAH) to achieve more educational goals and provide my environment (family) with the necessary tools for development, success, and happiness Inshaā€™Allah.
I appreciate the efforts of our PHR teacher and wish you ALL the best of luck in your studies.

    Hi everyone!
My name is Shakeelah, also known as Zahrah. I was born in the US and went to Pakistan for five years when I was 10 years old. This is my fifth semester at BCC. My major is architecture and I plan on transferring to NJIT in January. I am a Muslim and Islam is a pretty interesting religion. You canā€™t learn enough about it, which is why Iā€™m taking this class. In my life I have read the Quran many times, but never once read the entire translation. Since Arabic isnā€™t my native language, in this class I expect to gain a better understanding of the Quran.
I wish everyone a great semester!!!

    Hi everybody!
My name is Hatice. I am a muslim and i am a Turkish. This is my first semester in bergen and it has been 10 months since i came to New Jersey. We moved here from California because of my fathers job. I enrolled in this class to actually learn about my religion not only in my language but also in english. I thought i could have more knowledge and when somebody asks “why do muslims pray five times a day?or why do they cover their heads?” and know about islam and then it would be easier for me to answer quesitons in their mind. And my understanding of islam is a feeling that i cannot simply express. One thing i can say about this is it makes my life meaningful.
Hope you all enjoy the class.

    Hi everyone!

My name is Beyza and I am 19 years old. I was born in Turkey, Ankara. My major is Physical Therapy. I took this class because I would love to learn more about Islam and Quran. I came to the America one year ago and at school people always ask me questions about Islam but I did not know how to answer them in English, so this is an another reason why I took this class, that I could tell people more about Islam in English, with descriptive information and more clear, so everyone could learn about Islam.

I wish everyone has a great semester!

    Hello everybody,

My name is Andrew Han and I am of Korean decent. I am a 21-year old student attending Bergen Community College. I plan on transferring to a four-year school and complete my bachelorā€™s degree. I only have a few semesters left and in these last semesters, I am exploring the vast library of classes Bergen offers. I also started to become interested in Islam after watching documentaries and movies that take place in the Middle East or have Islamic ties. Looking past the negative image some Americans have of Muslims, I feel that the religion has more to offer. So far, my only expectation for this course is that I will become more knowledgeable in the religion so that I can have my own views and make my own judgment. I also hope to show colleges that I am ambitious to learn and that I am well-rounded as a student.

    Hello im Lindita Berberi.
This is my third time trying to post my introduction thats why its late.
Im 19 years old and i live in Garfield NJ. Im Muslim but my family does not practice it. I used to to go a catholic school in Elmwood Park at St. Leo’s for two years. My parents thought it was a good idea because they did not like how the public schools were teaching their students. At catholic school they were harder on grades. After catholic school i moved to wayne to go to school at Wayne Valley. It was a top rancked public school. When i recieved my diploma we moved back to Garfield because it was more affordable. I work at Macys, Willowbrook Mall in the dress shirts department. I also enjoy playing volleyball, soccer, and basketball. I hope to major in accounting.
